commonroom pottery classes @ AMAVIDA Montessori School

This course will convey basic techniques of working and building with clay (wedging; pinch, coil, slab), its decoration (textures; glazing), and let your creativity run wild! Ideas and impulses stemming from art history and cultures of the world will be provided, but students are free to explore their own ideas and pursue their own creations. We will keep a pottery “diary” to track our projects and their progress (both one-day and multi-week projects). Teaching units will include basic techniques of hand-building and surface decoration as well as clay marbling. We will also explore various forms and functions of ceramic objects from Neolithic pots, to ancient drinking vessels and jars, Mesoamerican and East Asian incense burners, mosaic pictures, masks, figurines and so much more!

Things to note:

• Hands-on learning: Children can be sure that they will have completed many pieces by the end of the semester.
• We place value on a creative and friendly environment where they will feel confident and relaxed. 
• The children will start to understand the nature of clay and develop a holistic exploration of this material. After this semester, they will be confident, independent potters.
• The course fee covers all materials, including clay, tools, and glazes, as well as firing services.
• The pieces produced over 3 weeks will be glazed during the fourth session, and then fired at commonroom studio; the finished pieces will be returned to the children at Amavida after firing.
• Please remind your kids that this course is about the experience of having fun and being creative while learning new skills!

About Sarah Teetor

Sarah Teetor has been interested in art and cultures her entire life. She earned a BA in art history and German studies from Wellesley College (USA), where she also studied sculpture under Carlos Dorrien. She continued her studies in Vienna, focusing on medieval European, Islamic, and Asian art, and visiting the city’s amazing museum collections, while also travelling the world. She has taught at the university level and looks forward to bringing her collected knowledge to the commonroom @ AMAVIDA ceramics course!
